Sussex Pump Cluster
The Sussex Pump Cluster is being established to provide an exciting vision for the Pump industry to develop and become a dominant centre for pump technology in the Southeast region with a focus on exploiting market opportunities by improved marketing, engineering, design, manufacture and supply chain development.

The Sussex Pump Industry
The South East of England region has 98 pump related companies employing 2000 people with a sales turnover of 380m. These companies range from service facilities, family owned businesses and foreign owned multinationals. All are characterized by being relatively small and having local management and P&L responsibility.

Cluster Members
Currently there are 20 active pump companies in the cluster from industries as diverse as Oil & Gas, Pharmaceuticals, Food & Beverage, Sewerage & Wastewater. The cluster includes Manufacturers, stockists service providers & suppliers to the local industry. Interest is high and membership is increasing as the cluster and its activities become well known.

Development Programme
As part of the services to be offered by the University of Brighton to Sussex Pumps members CENTRIM has been providing an integrated cluster development programme which started in December 2003 and is ongoing.

The key objective of the cluster development programme is to provide an opportunity for MD's to reflect on their current and probable competitive position and consider whether to revise their company's or the cluster's strategy. There are also other seminars from the School of Business will cover HR, Marketing and Management as well as Test Facilities on offer from the School of Engineering.

PROPOSAL SUBMISSION TO SEEDA
The Sussex Pump Cluster is a SEEDA funded initiative, started in 2003. This phase is coming to the end, and so the cluster will be submitting a new proposal to SEEDA to extend this successful cluster project for another period. Much has been learnt about cluster development during this initial phase and these elements will be reflected in the new proposal.

Watch this space for news of our success in this endeavour and details of the new programmes and initiatives.
